Abstract

<b>On the digitisation of historical dictionaries</b>The textual and structural characteristics of printed historical German dictionaries call for special requirements in converting these works into computer-readable form. The diverse treatment of the articles requires a great deal of follow-up manual work since the often narrative structure of the texts limits automatic processing. The following article describes a series of experiments with Moriz Heyne's "Deutsches Wörterbuch" which were conducted to illustrate the limitations (but also the possibilities) of converting an historical dictionary into electronic media.
